Biography

French Polynesia | Artist: Taina Calissi

Taina is a multidisciplinary artist who blends mediums, techniques, and artistic worlds. Her large-format paintings are vibrant, instinctive, and spontaneous, applied directly to the canvas without sketches or patterns. “The spontaneity and imperfection define my artistic signature,” she says. Inspired by early 20th-century movements, particularly Symbolism, her figurative works flirt with abstraction, emphasizing texture and material. The human body is a central theme in her art, captured through dynamic choreography in photography and video. She encourages audience interaction through immersive installations during exhibitions. Her career began in 1996 with an outdoor exhibition in Arahoho, Tiarei, her childhood neighborhood. Taina curated the collective exhibition Poly Morphini at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Expanding into sculpture, she experimented with clay, resin, and plaster. She has exhibited internationally, including Art Expo New York, Miami Art Week, and Art Connects Women. She is also the founder of Raw Tahiti, promoting Polynesian contemporary artists.
